Lewis Hamilton took advantage of the Formula 1 summer break to attend the Olympic Games in Paris. The Mercedes driver was seen at the fencing trials supporting his good friend Miles Shamley Watson. The American fell defeated and was left without a medal in the team event, where gold went to Japan. The fencer received a bronze medal in 2016 in RO, and Hamilton says that he is inspired by him and does not rule out participating in some matches in the future.
Seven-time world champion in Formula 1, already knows what it’s like to be part of the Olympic Games. Since 2012 he has been one of the people responsible for carrying the Olympic torch in London. At that time, the Englishman became the first Formula 1 driver to carry the famous torch. This year, Charles LeClair was the second, having done the same in Paris.
His presence in Paris 2024
Hamilton used to compete at the highest level in his car, but this day as a spectator at the Olympics left him a fan. “It’s a great experience to be at the Olympics and feel the energy of the fans. The dedication, concentration and endurance of these competitors is incredible to witness up close“, Commented The Mercedes driver on his social networks.
Unfortunately, Hamilton could not see his great friend, Miles Shamley Watson hanging a medal around his neck at the end of the DA. “We always support each other and talk almost every day. How hard he works and I love being with him, but I realize the pressure that comes with being at certain events”, English comments for CNN. In addition, the seven-time world champion admitted that something similar happens to him when he sees his brother running.
Olympic career
On many occasions, the integration of Formula 1 as an Olympic sport has been discussed. At the moment, this has not been implemented and Hamilton cannot represent the UK in a car as he would like. Like many other riders, the Englishman is a big fan of other Olympic sports and one of them is surfing.
This appeared as an Olympic sport in Tokyo for the first time in history, and was repeated at the 2024 Paris Games. Hamilton has declared himself a fan of the Olympic Games and surfing may be the key that opens the door to participation in the future: “I’m not good enough at surfing to be at the Olympics , but some DA sea olympiaco competition”.
